Most people, to the best of my knowledge, grow up wanting fancy sportscars or the newest, top of the line machines. Despite the jokes and jibes I dreamed of the Datsun 280ZX simply because of it’s aesthetic shape… the long, sleek hood and short but shapely backside. To this day I still think it’s one seriously sexy beast and I’d love to own one. That, or the Nissan model up. Well, to be fair there are a great many cars I’d love to own: the Masarati Medici 2…or the Corvette Stingray ’69. Or the ‘ 66 or ‘ 67 Chevy Camaro. I have a great love of American Muscle and Italian hand built cars. While my brother is the petrolhead of the family and knows more about engines and how they work than most engineers, for me the appeal has always been in the sound and the design. As such, it makes sense I get as many of them in front of my camera as I can whenever the opportunity presents itself. Happily for me, we have an annual Motor Show here in the Lowveld that attracts some of the most gorgeous machines imaginable.
Being a photographer with a crush on cars has it’s perks too, case in point I once got offered a free test drive by Masarati in Bryanston, Johannesburg for some of the shots I sent them one year – that’s what I call an incentive!
My collection of shots is small at the moment, but it leaves a lot of room in my The World Around Me gallery for future shows – so do keep an eye out. Leave your thoughts and comments below.
